Nike's story

Nike, Inc., formerly (1964-78) Blue Ribbon Sports, American sportswear company based in Beaverton, Oregon. It was founded in 1964 as Blue Ribbon Sports by Bill Bowerman, athletic coach at the University of Oregon, and his former student Phil Knight. They opened their first selling point in 1966 and launched the Nike brand shoe in 1972. The company went to Nike, Inc. in 1978 and went out for two years later. In the early 21st century, Nike had sales points and distributors in more than 170 countries, and his logo, a curved brand called "swoosh", was recognized worldwide.

Since the end of the 1980s, Nike has constantly expanded its business through multiple acquisitions and diversified its product line, including the Cole Haan shoe company (1988; sold in 2012) and the sports equipment manufacturer Canstar Sports, Inc. (2003). (1994; later called Bauer and sold in 2008), and Umbro, a clothing and sports equipment company (2008; sold in 2012). The company founded Nike ACG ("All Condition Equipment") in 1996, which sells products for extreme sports, such as skis and mountain bikes. In the early 2000s, Nike began selling sports technology accessories, including portable heart rate monitors and high-altitude wrist compass.

Why is Nike so successful?

The success of Nike is partly due to the recognition of athletes like Michael Jordan, Mia Hamm, Roger Federer and Tiger Woods. The NikeTown store chain (which opened for the first time in 1990) pays tribute to these and other company spokesmen, while offering consumers a full range of Nike products. In the 1990s, the image of the company was exposed due to the hard working environment of its factories abroad.
